Highlights

  • Despite a year of discussion in Congress, there is still little certainty about what changes might be made to the US tax code.
  • Equity markets had another strong quarter to finish up the year, with the major indexes closing near their all-time highs.
  • The largest drawdown of 2021 – the 5% pullback at the end of the third quarter – was quite modest by historical standards, and only 13% of stocks in the S&P 500® were down for the year.
  • Opportunities for harvesting losses to offset taxable capital gains were limited, but deferring short-term gains and choosing optimal tax lots helped add some incremental after-tax benefit.
