Sébastien Duquet, chief commercial officer at Mirova SunFunder1, told delegates at the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN2) Investor Forum 2022 how private investment in emerging clean energy could be accelerated.

Duquet was speaking on a panel entitled: “Private Institutional Investment for Emerging Market Clean Energy and Climate Impact”.

He noted not only the substantial interest in the sector from investors, but also the challenges for those who are inexperienced in the sector. The considerable due diligence that the public sector undertakes on managers like Mirova SunFunder is one way to mitigate this challenge. Private sector investors are able to leverage this due diligence, lightening their load while gaining access to the expertise of public institutions that have decades of experience in investing in emerging markets geographies and sectors.

During the panel session, Duquet also talked about how to achieve impact at scale by sharing Mirova SunFunder’s hands-on approach to solving energy poverty in underserved communities, building relationships, and grasping opportunities.

Blended finance is an essential aspect of Mirova SunFunder’s way to unlock capital for emerging markets' energy transition projects since it helps to lower the risk profiles of riskier countries and innovative segments.

“As fund managers, we need to find a balance between investing at scale, managing the complexity of deals and keeping management costs to a minimum,” Duquet said.

“By sharing our insights, private investors can better understand our sector and potentially become key players in helping overcome the challenges and helping mobilise capital into clean energy in emerging markets.”
