WCM is in a very enviable position. We're a $130 billion* money management firm with 97 people, 67 of whom own shares in the firm. So we are a very scaled boutique organisation that moves incredibly rapidly. And that is a massive competitive advantage.
Q: Why is your headcount so low?
We talk all the time to peers of ours that are the same size in terms of assets, but are three or four times the size in terms of people. And when you get too many people in any organisation, you build up layers of bureaucracy. When you build up layers of bureaucracy, the ability to make decisions fast goes away. So we remain small in terms of headcount very intentionally.
Q: How are you using AI at WCM?
You know what's interesting is with the advent of AI it actually allows us to do much more effective, efficient, deep work and iterate more without having to add headcount. On our investment team right now, we have about 20 people. And we've actually sat down and said, "Look, I'm not even sure we're going to have to hire anybody over the next three, four or five years because we can do so much more and we do so much more using AI in our firm. And we're not just using it in a very plain vanilla fashion, you know, in terms of helping us sort through all kinds of pages for a research report. We're using AI to make us better at portfolio construction, to hold us accountable in different areas of the portfolio.
